Trout-perch

Percopsis omiscomaycus

Summary 2

Family: Percopsidae

Trout-perch(Percopsis omiscomaycus) are most common over sand and gravel in the big lakes, but can be found in some of the larger rivers. Coloration is good camouflage when looking down at fish from above. Most active at night. The fins on the back are a combination of trout characters (fleshy fin) and perch characters (fin with a spine), hence the species’ common name.

How to recognize: Small fleshy fin in front of the tail. The first fin on the back has a spine along the leading edge, while the rest of the fin supports are soft rays. Horizontal mouth. Back is sandy colored with diffuse brown blotches. Relatively large eye. Up to 6 inches /15 centimeters long.
