Pumpkinseeds(Lepomis gibbosus) are a widespread species routinely found in inland lakes and nearshore habitats of the big lakes. Often near aquatic vegetation. They eat small aquatic insects and crustaceans. Easily caught with a baited hook. Male clears a circular area on the bottom of all debris and plants, then defends this nest from other fishes, crayfishes, etc. Female lays eggs in the nest, then leaves. Male remains to guard the young until they are old enough to swim off.

How to recognize: Roundish or “pan-shaped” body. Soft “ear flap” behind the head is dark blue with a red spot at the end. Several vertical bars along the body, interspersed with vertical columns of orange dots. Mouth is small, not reaching eye. Up to 8 inches /20 centimeters long.
