Yellow-rumped Warbler

Setophaga coronata

Summary 5

The Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata) is a medium-sized (5-6 inches) wood warbler that is found in two distinct color patterns. I will only discuss the western group. As ours are primarily wintering migrants, they have a dull brown back and pale belly and breast with conspicuous yellow patches on their throats, rumps and sides.

Where on Campus? 6

Yellow-rumped warblers can be seen across the campus in both the interior plazas and the perimeter woods.

Habitat 6

In fall and winter they move to open woods and shrubby habitats, including coastal vegetation, parks, and residential areas. Yellow-rumped Warblers primarily breed in northern and high-mountain evergreen forest habitats.

Life History 6

Nesting Females build the nest usually in conifers using fine plant material such as conifer needles and grasses.
Feeding Yellow-rumped Warblers primarily small invertebrates but will also eat berries and other fruits during the winter.

Distribution 6

The western form breeds in the Pacific Northwest, the mountains of northern California, and in the interior west; wintering in the southern California and the southwest. Both forms winter from the U.S.border south to Central America; the western form also breeds locally in the mountains of Mexico and Guatemala. In winter, this species may be found in open forest, thickets, and scrub as well as in backyards and urban and suburban parks.

Migration 6

Depending upon the population, Yellow-rumped Warblers are short-distance to long-distance migrants.
