California Lancetooth

Haplotrema minimum

Description 5

Very low spire, almost a flat coil when viewed from the side. The body can extend quite far out of its shell. It can look similar to Oxychilus, but the shell is more opaque than the glassy shells of species in that genus, and the umbilicus is open enough that you can see several whorls, whereas in Oxychilus the umbilicus is more like a single hole (i.e. it's perforate).

Life History 5

While this snail will eat vegetable matter in captivity, it is primarily predatory. It has been observed preying on shoulderband snails (Ingram 1942)

In SF 5

So far I've only found a shell in Land's End, but these are fairly common snails in relatively undisturbed areas, so I wouldn't be surprised if they could be found in forested parts of McLaren Park, Twin Peaks, etc.
