Leaves and stems glabrous or nearly; Leaves 3 - 5 paired leaflets; Pods glabrous, splitting into 2 spiralling valves, with 1 - 4 seeds.

M. obovata is related to M. viridis, differing in its distinctive, narrowly obovate leaflets and its very small wings which are only about half as long as the keel.
