Abert's Squirrel

Sciurus aberti

Summary 2

Abert’s squirrels are similar in size to chipmunks and prairie dogs that can reach up to 2 lbs and are 46-58 cm long. Both males and females are similar in size and they weigh up to 25 oz at adult size. They have a gray fur color on their sides, reddish rusty color on their backs, and have a white belly. Although Abert squirrels in Colorado have a solid black coat of fur on their entire body. Like most other squirrels, they have a bushy tail and are white on the underside of the tail. As seen in the photo above, during winter season they grow long reddish fur tufts on their ears that often disappear by late summer similar to Eurasian Red Squirrels.

Aberts squirrels can be found in parts of Utah in habitats of Ponderosa Pines, and could possibly been seen in Iron County.
