Crawford's gray shrew, Notiosorex crawfordi, also known as the desert shrew, is a small shrew found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. These shrews can be found in Iron County. They are similar in size and shape of a mouse, but they have a longer snout, longer and larger feet, and ears are pushed up. They are sandy brown with some gray under tones and belly in color as you can see in the photo above. This coloration allows them to blend with their brown, desert environment. Other shrews are different in coloration, and may have a longer or shorter snout. They are among one of the smallest desert animal. It typically can get to about 2 inches long and weigh 5 grams. They also have 5 clawed toes on each foot as you can tell in the picture above.
