Caesalpinia pulcherrima

Summary 4

Pollen good
Nectar low

Flowering time 11-4 West Indies. Planted throughout the tropics and subtropics of the world. Short-lived perennial with prickly branches. Attractive scarlet-orange-yellow flowers. Nectar rises in thin, 15mm long flower tubes. Long flowering. (Penfold, A. R., & Willis, J. L. (1961). The Eucalypts : Botany, Cultivation, Chemistry, and Utilization.)

Bright cluster of fiery scarlet and yellow flowers growing on the higher branches of a tall shrub or small tree suggest the blossoms of royal poinciana. Actually, they are close relatives. Individual flowers are smaller, with five thein, spreading petals and a colorful calyx. The petals are sometimes margined with yellow, which adds to the brillant effect. Conspicuous are long, red stamens and a pistil, which project from the center. Flat seed pods follow the flowers. There is an all-yellow form which is simular in every respec except color. The leaves of plant are of double compound form, with many extremely small leaflets, rounded in outline. The shrub grows widely through the tropics of both Asia and America so that its original home is now uncertain. Another tree with very simular flowers, but of lighter yellow, can be distinguised easily from the yellow above by the tufts of long, red stamens... (Kuck, L. E., & Tongg, R. C. (1965).
