The specific epithet means "dwarfish" or "lowly" in Latin, referring to the plant's short stature.

Shrubby perennial herb. Leaves alternate, elliptic to ovate, pubescent particularly along the veins. Flowers in long terminal and axillary racemes, small white, cream or pinkish. Fruit consisting of small bright red berries.
