East European Vole

Microtus levis

Description 2

The species is the double of the common voles Microtus arvalis . According to external signs, usually used in taxonomy, both types do not differ from each other. The main diagnostic feature known at the present time is the diploid set of chromosomes: 54 for the Eastern European voles and 46 for the common voles. The reliable and rapid determination of species affiliation neither in field scientific experiments, nor, especially, in the practice of plant protection is yet possible.
