The hairy woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus) is a medium-sized woodpecker, ranging from 7.1 to 10.2 inches in length. With an estimated population in 2003 of over nine million individuals, the hairy woodpecker is listed by the IUCN as a species of least concern in North America. Hairy woodpeckers are very similar to the smaller downy woodpecker, except for the hairy's longer bill and lack of black spots on its white tail feathers. It can be spotted year-round in the COSA
