The Common Snapping Turtle, Chelydra serpentina, is one of the most common freshwater turtles in Western New York. The Painted Turtle, Chrysemys picta, is the most widespread native turtle of North America and a common species in Western New York. It is a smaller than the Snapping Turtle, but there is overlap in size between Painted Turtles and younger Snapping Turtles.
