Males are gray and brown with a black face outlined with white. Females are plainer brown and lack facial marks. Both sexes have a comma-shaped topknot of feathers projecting forward from the forehead, longer in males than females. Adult males are rich gray and brown all over except they have white and chestnut scales on the belly. , with a black face outlined with bold white stripes. Females are a plainer brown above and lack the facial markings of the males.
They are usually found in groups called coveys.
