Whether your visit to the Kaibab National Forest takes you north or south of the Grand Canyon, you may encounter a wide variety of mammals. As part of the Colorado Plateau ecosystem adjacent to the Grand Canyon, the Kaibab National Forest is uniquely situated and provides a diversity of habitat types. From desert scrub of Snake Gulch to the spruce-fir lined parks of the high elevation North Kaibab Plateau. The South Kaibab Ranger District includes coniferous forests and woodlands, chaparral, and grasslands. . The Mogollon Rim, which extends from New Mexico into north central Arizona, ends on the Williams Ranger District. The diversity of habitats on the Kaibab supports a complex assemblage of wildlife and plants, with many opportunities for viewing wildlife.
Many mammals in Arizona are more active at night, especially during warmer months. Dawn and dusk may provide the best opportunities for viewing animals.
