Lory State Park's 2,492 acres are situated 7 miles west of Fort Collins in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The park borders Horsetooth Reservoir and reaches 7,015 feet at its highest point. The park contains a gradual gradation of ecosystems from grasslands and riparian areas into mountain mahogany shrubland into ponderosa pine woodland and forest. With diversity in ecosystems present, comes diversity in the species living in the park.
