This Indian Paintbrush is able to grow in serpentine soil. The unique fuchsia-like flowers and sharp bristles along the stem make this species one of California's most unusual ornamental shrubs. Reflexed red sepals sit below upturned white petals surrounding a long white style. Although many gooseberries are prized for their edible fruit, the berries of this species are composed mostly of skin and seeds.

This is one of California's showiest native wildflowers. The yellow, white, and purple color combination of the lower petals serve as a landing platform for bees and other pollinators. The corolla consists of two narrow ascending petals and three fused petals below. Look carefully at the landing platform and you will see the notches and pleats marking the sites of petal fusion.
The flowers are white to pink and arranged in a raceme on a long peduncle. Many scaly hairs on the upper surface of the petals give it a comical appearance. The stem, is prostrate with basal leaves in an alternating pattern. The leaves are sometimes used in beer making as a hops substitute.
The genus Clarkia was named for Captain William Clark (1770-1838) of the Lewis and Clark Expedition which was sent by Thomas Jefferson to find the Northwest Passage. Tiny 5-petaled flowers pack together to form the domed inflorescence of this species. Jutting out, star-like, beyond the flower heads are bracts which are modified leaves.
