One of our most unexpected and rewarding sights occurred one early evening in June (year tbd)when we came upon a Cow moose with her male and female yearlings. We watched, filmed, and photo'd in awe as we witnessed a live moose family break up. The bull yearling kept following his mom, but she kept bluff charging him away. The female stayed near her, but out of the way. The bull finally got the hint and wandered towards the woods. The other 2 crossed the road and headed up a driveway. He watched a bit longer then disappeared into the tree line. I always wondered what the time span was before she would boot her female out.
It's a terrible, terrible at-dusk phone picture of a porcupine's butt as it waddles away from me. But, I was just so excited, I've never seen one in the wild before. It crossed the road in front of me and I just took to long to find something with a camera.
Took offense at me being in its road. Hmmph.
Trying to find a safe place to lay eggs. The depression she dug was very shallow, due to the hard-packed earth of the roadside. A good samaritan carefully moved her to the opposite side of the road—the direction she seemed to be heading. However, after returning to our vehicle, we spotted her poised on the edge of the road again. She appeared to be attempting to cross again.
