Description

This robin was alone in a tree directly off the parking lot on the South side of Jeffords building on UVM’s campus. This Robin was mostly still sitting in the tree, which made the initial observation quite difficult. The Robin called first, which drew our groups attention to the general location. Following another call, we were able to spot the Robin still in the tree. The distinct red breast of the bird revealed it definitively in the tree.

Later, four additional Robins were spotted in flight. The flight of the Robin is a very rapid swooping motion, as they often fly short distances from tree to tree. The elliptical style wings of the Robin allow for this, as that wing shape is very universal and ideal for the Robin’s style of flight. This flight spotting was at 2:40PM. Conversely, at 2:57 a group of 6 mallards was spotted flying overhead. This was along Spear street, towards Gutterson garage. This group of Mallards was flying high in the air, appearing to move a long distance. Mallards are “dabbling ducks” and spend a lot of time in the water. Therefore, the wing style is very different from the Robin. Mallard wings are suited for long distance and elevation flight, much like a plane, which is quite different from the Robin.

During the birding trip, the weather was very overcast with a slight snowfall. This directly influenced our ability to spot and identify birds, which is why the flight patterns were very important. The mallards were only identified by their silhouette and distant sound when flying. To me, it was hard to tell the difference between the Mallard and a Canadian Goose, however the TAs were able to assist spotting/hearing the difference. Even the Robin in the tree was a difficult ID, because the overcast sky and dense tree made for a very obstructed and monochromatic view of an already still bird. Had the sky been clear, without snow, the spottings would have been much easier. In addition, it is possible more birds may have been out on a nicer day.
