Found 11 miles back on a trail in the Gros Ventre wilderness. 2 days after a severe windstorm- we thought it was related to that. In the next mile we found another dead bird on the trail that looked like it had been there longer, a bit more decomposed.

Description

Found this bird lying on the grass in our front yard right before our first hard freeze. I believe I saw it moments before climbing and pecking on one of the maple trees in our front yard. It was lying on its side in the grass, so I grabbed some gloves, a towel, and a box and placed it inside the box (open) on our covered front porch. Wildlife rescue was closed for Labor Day so we kept an eye on it and found that it had left the box a few hours later. I believe I found this same bird two nights later, hanging upside down on the trunk of a spruce tree next to where our bird feeder hangs from our back deck... it had died, but still had one foot holding on to the bark of the tree. It didn't seem to be breathing, but I placed it inside the box and left in our garage just in case. It was definitely dead. :o(
