Description

Common along a narrow strip running along side of State Highway One from just south of Mercer, north along the main Trunk Rail Railway for about 1 kilometre. Growing in open, stony, poorly drained ground. Plants in full flower. Not noted here previously - in New Zealand this species is still rather scarce but is evidently starting to spread - current records I know for it are Auckland City (Onehunga and St Johns / Glen Dowie suburbs), Rangitoto Island, Tauranga and near Levin, State Highway One.

Seedling, now five years old - one of three that had germinated (2015) near a planted tree which fruits periodically (isolated tree) - see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/1493965. I have left the seedlings to see what happens without any care. In January 2019 all three appeared to have died from drought however one re-sprouted over winter and this is the specimen seen here.
