Lesser Nighthawk (Chordeiles acutipennis)

14 June 2017
Interstate 8 East
Gila Bend, Pinal County, Arizona

Stopped for gas at Gila Bend and when leaving noticed several Lesser Nighthawks feeding on insects attracted to a tall light fixture by the side of the ramp onto the interstate headed east. Some of the nighthawks were actually landing and resting on the on-ramp (pavement) proper, and periodically taking off and landing again as they fed. We stopped far enough so as not to scare them away but still be able to take a pic. Taken with ambient light hence the dark presentation (though lightened in processing the images).

Description

I have a 100 gallon tub of water near my house so wildlife can drink. Just as it was getting dark a short while ago something caught my eye and this small White-tailed buck came to drink. Somehow this fella got a plastic jug caught up in his velvet antlers...I hope he can get it off. I had to chuckle at this sight, however, something I had certainly never seen before. Anyway, he drank some water then trotted away. Hope he will be OK!

Normally House Finches are not able to feed successfully from thistle feeders since their bills are too thick. But this female House Finch has seemed to have figured out a way!

Description

Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris)

20 July 2018
Elm Fork Park
Greenbelt FM 455
Pilot Point, Denton County, Texas

When we first arrived at the site of the canoe launch at Elm Fork Park and began descending the cement steps down to the water a small flock of some 20-30 birds flew away from the tall grass growing in shallow water. It is a boggy area of the park. Many of these birds returned after initially getting startled with our presence but when they returned they took to mostly staying hidden in the lower reaches of the tall grass (3-4 feet tall) while they continued feeding on its seeds. The grass was so thick that most of the time you knew they were there (and you heard them as well) but you couldn’t see them. The birds were male and female Painted and Indigo Buntings. There may well have been some juvenile birds among them. Had not previously seen this many Painted and/or Indigo Buntings in one place. They were taking their fill of this bountiful seed crop. We stayed a while and shot a few pics with our existing camera.

Description

Observed this bird on campus at Arizona State University. There were several birds flying around the area, all appearing to be visually the same. All of them appeared to be black with a slight shine and a elongated tail. Some of the birds would land on tables or on the ground to eat crumbs left by people. Some of the birds remained in groups in a near tree, others would fly/move around by themselves.
