Uncertain on identification. Behavior seems to match lovebug, but coloring not quite. The population of these bugs explodes periodically in my neighborhood during the spring and summer. They are often seen congregating on white surfaces such as cars or siding. They are usually attached to each other at the rear as in the last photo.
