Pretty sure it’s a least bittern but not 100%. Wingspan was comparable to that of a wood duck, teal, or small mallard.
I saw this one fly out of the shore grasses and perch in a tree across the lake inlet. A few minutes later, I saw a similar bird do the same. The other one was possibly a mature male least bittern or a yellow crowned night heron- I couldn’t tell and only saw it for a moment. I was unable to get a picture of the second one.
Note: this is not a green heron. There is a green heron that sometimes comes by, but it is at least twice as large as this bird was, which is why I am pretty sure this is a bittern of sorts.
This could be a juvenile night heron, but I doubt anything larger would be a match.
Found in large cinderblock pile, under hardwood canopy, along with one other Eurycea salamander (observation http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/151290378)
