Reflections on our Biodiversity Inventory.

Every year, I take my students out to do biodiversity inventories. We do lichen studies, macro-invertebrate inventories, bioblitz activities, butterfly identification, pond water inventories, bird inventories, and nature journaling. Each year, I see the connections that my students make to nature. As teachers, we have to nurture and foster these connections because our students go outside less and less. Hopefully each year, I am helping create good stewards for our planet.
The big difference for this year for our inventories, is that we started using iNaturalist. (Thank you DLIA for your help with the technology to help us use iNaturalist!) Using this app has been so helpful and fun. Since we started using iNaturalist, students take pictures of life and we load our observations. Then, we wait! It is so like a game. We checked it daily to see which of our organisms made it to research grade.

Crown Academy Bioblitz

Crown Academy did their first bioblitz today. Students were given 10 minutes to record the living things near the pond. Students then took pictures of interesting specimens to share. We collected data on more that 20 organisms. The find of the day was lady beetle larva! Way to go Crown Academy.
