Beach Week

This week we made multiple trips to a beach in Cordova Bay. The kids played on a sandbar and spent a lot of time exploring the rocky tidal pools. We were all amazed at how you could find life almost anywhere. If you stood still and waited patiently you would see something moving. On the sandbar, J dug up a worm that was longer than his forearm. C spotted a tiny green bug wandering on the sand. We loved seeing "our" heron visit us every day.

One of our notable finds was a shell that looked like a small black cockle eating a larger cockle. It was alive, so I photographed it and let it be. But I found another one a few days later that only had a small area of dark shading, and I can now see that it is indeed one cockle, not two. I wonder if the area is dark when it is growing and then fades to the normal light colour? Hopefully someone can help me identify it. I think it is a Nuttall's Cockle:
