Bought a new Nikon D500 on August 18th

Decided to pick up a new Nikon D500 while they are still available. My capture rate on birds in flight has certainly improved and the ISO noise is much improved. So far I have used the following lenses:

  • Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED
  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR
  • Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR

Loving the 10fps feature which has really enabled me to get outstanding pictures of Terns plunging into the water.

Nikon Glass Rules

Just picked up a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens for my D7100 and what a fantastic lens. Great lens at a great price. First day in use I got great pictures of birds in the community.

Red-shouldered hawk

A first for me was seeing a Red-shouldered hawk yesterday. I saw him fly into a tree from a heavily forested area and landed perfectly in a sunlit area surrounded by old oaks and Spanish moss.

2018

In 2018 I started taking more pictures of wildlife and I am off to a good start for 2019.A pair of pileated woodpeckers visit the preserve next to my house and I am able to get some great pictures whenever I decide to go out in the morning. If I don't see any birds I can get a beautiful sunrise.

Slow Year For Nature Photography

Been busy working long days for several months so I haven't done much in nature photography. Still taking a lot of pictures when I can, but more around the house and with friends. I hope to do more nature photography in 2015.

Backyard Tree

Had to cut down a backyard tree today. It was getting more and more dead branches. The birds loved the tree and I had a few feeders hanging from the limbs over the years. Two big trees remain so they still have a place to go.

Observations Updated

I went through all my observations this morning and removed all Flickr photo links. Still had a couple remaining. I updated my Flickr photos from time to time which breaks the links. Mostly changing keywords or captions. Everything moved to Picasa now.

Woodpecker

Decided to put on my new lens and see what I could find in the backyard. Saw a bird moving around in one of the trees and zoomed in to see a woodpecker. Never know what you are going to find!

2008

Just went through all my pictures from 2008 and I only had 2 pictures of wildlife (birds) and they were junk. I don't know what was going on in 2008 that I didn't take any wildlife pics or even flowers! Well, there are the Koi pics from a pond, but that hardly qualifies. I must have been focused on my Kruger Park trip and searching out a better camera.
