City Nature Challenge 2020 in Ann Arbor/Washtenaw: Make Your iNat Observations Count!

You are @'ed on this journal entry because you have posted at least a couple of dozen observations in Washtenaw and/or the surrounding counties. If you'd rather not be copied in future, just let me know and I'll remove you.

Natural Area Preservation (NAP) is spearheading local participation in the 2020 City Nature Challenge (CNC), where cities spend 4 days in friendly competition to see who can get the most nature-based observations, species, participants, and more.

Because you’ve already earned your iNat observation chops, we thought you might be interested in joining in 😊 The CNC observation period is 24-27 April, with identification happening 28 April – 3 May. We’ll be posting more about the event itself in the near future, but in the meantime, please see below, and the post before this one.

If you’d like to receive updates on related events, please sign up to the City Nature Challenge Ann Arbor project here on iNat. You'll find more info at the other links too.

If you are interested in helping to organize, please contact me - it can be as low key or extravagant as you like! Here are just a few ideas:

Spread the word!
• Tell all your hiking, birding, herping, fishing, photography, etc., friends!
• Email and visit relevant organizations and tell them about it – what other organizations do you belong to?
• Suggest good places for making observations
• Like and repost the social media posts (see links below)
• Hang a notice in your coffee shop!*

Host** an event before and/or during CNC!!
• Lead a walk in a favorite park
• Rain garden weeding party
• iNat tutorial
• Moth sheets
• Practice bioblitz
• Observation hike
• Restoration events
• Round up your local iNat buddies and have post-blitz ID parties

Participate in an Event!!
Check out the iNat CNC Ann Arbor project page for listings, including webinars, tutorials, walks and more! Here’s a start:
• What is CNC webinar***, Tues 3 March, 6 – 7 pm
• Stewardship Circle meeting – iNat tutorial, Tues 10 March, 7:30-8:30 am, Bruegger’s Bagels, 709 N University Ave
• iNaturalist training webinar*, Tues 17 March, 6 – 7 pm
• How to Take Good iNat Photos webinar*, Tues 7 April, 6 – 7 pm
• Where to Go to Bioblitz webinar*, Tues 21 April, 6 – 7 pm

* We have some flyers and things we can contribute if you’d like to blanket an area in notices (e.g., every shop in downtown Dexter that has a place to post notices – they are a nice lime green lol).
** What does “hosting” look like? It depends upon the event, but for a hike or walk, it would be to provide info on what you’d like to do, where, when, whether you would like support, and the like (we have a form 😊 ). We’ll then post a sign-up sheet and announce it as a new event, and could include a call for experts in a particular discipline, if appropriate. Then show up at the place and time, and have fun!
*** Dial-up for webinars: https://cdisc.zoom.us/j/3536044913 Either join with computer audio, or call in +1 929 436 2866 US (New York); Meeting ID: 353 604 4913. No need to pre-register - just dial in

More events will be added as people volunteer to host them 😊

Thanks for the invite. I wish I could attend but I will be in Alabama at that time. If something changes, I will let you know.

@wildflowersuz Have a good trip! Perhaps you can help with IDing the following week - that's the biggest job of all :-) K.

I’ll mark it on my calendar in case I’m in MI. I’m in AL for most of the year now.

@ken-potter Excellent! If you like, start thinking about what you'd like to lead, if you're up for that :-)

You might have to explain that to me so I can see if I am up to it. :)
Maybe I should read all the fine details :)

No worries!! I put together an explanation along with a form we could use. You can find them at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1g-JexzHN7eIDtoTNeVY6FgXumnYIMV3d. Let me know if you have questions after reading them - they are definitely works in progress!
