City Nature Challenge: East Bay

Apologies for those of you who don't care about this, but there are a number of East Bay spots in https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Aeg_ELc0h9IiHNN7N3rKkp1JZRtIk-8p275rcl_Eqx4/edit#gid=1333502718 that don't have any volunteers. I signed up for the summit of Diablo on Sunday, but I'm pretty free in the morning and early afternoon on Saturday, and maybe Monday if I decide to call this "work."

So, anyone want to hit some of the remaining East Bay spots, either with me or not? Some places that I think need some attention are: Serpentine Prairie, Mitchell Canyon (esp. for birds, but tons of other stuff too), Las Trampas, Lime Ridge, Black Diamond Mines, Springtown, Sunol. To a lesser extent: Briones, Huckleberry, any other East Bay park (I just don't think they have as many endemics as the hotspots).

I'm planning on running my moth light Friday and Sunday nights, locations TBD. I don't have high hopes, forecast is for cool temps and possible rain...

Also, just a reminder that CCNH is running a wrap party Tuesday evening at Revolution Cafe (very close to West Oakland BART).

@damontighe, @ang, @hfabian, @kevinhintsa, @catchang, @leftcoastnaturalist, @rhislop, anyone else: any volunteers / plans? Looks like Kevin's already planning to head to Big Break on Saturday, and Damon is doing dock fouling at Jack London on Monday. Rad.

I signed up for the Serpentine Prairie on Sunday. Am open for assisting with the moth lights on Friday and/or Sunday; keep me in the loop as to where you are thinking of.

I'm having to play this by ear right now as my wife is heading for England, possibly tomorrow, to visit her family. She flies standby. I plan to do Big Break with Kevin but could do any of the ones you mentioned on Sunday. I'm also free Saturday afternoon. Let me know where I'm most needed.

I'll be back Friday afternoon, so Saturday is a possibility. Maybe mothing on Friday, but that might be pushing it.

If you collect water samples (1-2mL) when your out and about. I can screen them under a microscope tuesday next week. I can set up a box on my porch at 1502 Alice St to pick up tubes and drop tubes if people would be interested in that. Just let me know.

I'm going to hit Lake Merritt Friday morning to shoot birds etc., and if work isn't super busy I'll be sneaking off to do a little bit in redwood EBRPD friday as well. I'm up for moth lights on Friday!

Hey @damontighe I prob can wrap up work early in Friday if you want to hit Redwood or maybe EBMUD.

Alas, I'm helping @apatten run a bioblitz down in the Los Padres on Friday/Saturday. I'm leading a wildflower walk on Sunday in Briones, so I can cover that with quick cell phone shots while 80 people trail me. Someone should make an effort to get to Sunol, too - that place is blowin' up right now.

Posted by naturalisttrent about 7 years ago

I think I can make it to either Sunol or Mitchell on Saturday...

Posted by tiwane about 7 years ago

@catchang - I'v got a work appt at 5:30pm that just got dropped on me today, so I'm probably only going to be able to do early morning stuff friday.

Posted by damontighe about 7 years ago

Alright, Constance and I are going to Sunol on Saturday, probably try and get there... 10 or 11, b/c we're lazy, though maybe earlier for birds? Maybe we could pick up a Pygmy Owl. I'll get in touch with those of you interested in moths, though like I said, weather doesn't look cooperative...

Posted by kueda about 7 years ago

Ah, I was thinking of going there Saturday, around 9...

Posted by tiwane about 7 years ago

No worries, I'll text you when we leave. I sincerely doubt either of us will be able to get there by 9.

Posted by kueda about 7 years ago

It's all good. To boost diversity I'm heading to Mitchell/Black Point instead - have fun at Sunol!

Kevin and I did Redwood regional park yesterday (periphery): Serpentine Prairie, Dun to Golden Spike loop; and Bridle Trail to parking lot. Today we do Big Break and Black Diamond Mines. Highlight was a Pileated Woodpecker near Serpentine Prairie.

Nice work, everyone! I'm having a bit of a dilemma: do I head up to Diablo tomorrow even though it's going to rain? Am I going to be able to document much if it's raining? Hmm...

Posted by kueda about 7 years ago

Shouldn't the plants still be ok for that? Or I guess the flowers might be closed-up...

Posted by tiwane about 7 years ago

@kueda im free tomorrow now- up for Diablo?

Posted by catchang about 7 years ago

I'm going to head up there, but I'm honestly feeling a bit burnt out, so I probably won't stay past noon, and probably won't get over to the North Peak to find Sagebrush Lizard or down to find the golden ear drops. Plan for the rest of the day: not looking at screens.

Posted by kueda about 7 years ago

I hear ya. I am heartily tired of RAIN.

Kevin and I managed to do Big break and Black Diamond Mines yesterday. Now to start posting. If the weather holds I'll do Lime Ridge solo tomorrow afternoon I may also try to do Mt. Diablo on Tuesday --maybe someplace you haven't covered.

Posted by hfabian about 7 years ago

I hit the summit this morning and picked up most of the unusual stuff I know of and was able to detect. Dipped on Mt Diablo phacelia and whispering bells, but maybe it's just too far after the burn for them. No bugs and hardly any birds out in this weather.

Posted by kueda about 7 years ago

Yes, I'm just editing and posting today. Hopefully I'll be out Monday afternoon. Tuesday is wide open.
