The spirits of Shui Lau Tin
Shui Lau Tin (水流田) is the area that I lived, the name can be literally translated as "Fields with flowing water"
It was a beautiful and relaxing countryside village with a lot of green when I moved in two decades ago. At that time, I could found many birds, buffalo, butterflies, fireflies, goats and stag beetles roaming around!! Unfortunately, all these became a memory as the nature of Shui Lau Tin is being destroyed. Only in the past years, 6 out of 10 of the abandoned field, bush forest or meadows were bulldozed. They were not stopping until every yard of soil is replaced by cement.
In the past 2 years, I have been racing with time and try to record any wildlife, mostly insects that I could find in the area. Many of them were found on a metal construction that near my home. This bug magnet was actually an environment indicator. I was happy at first as I almost lost counts of the species found. Then I was worried because they became less and rarer. Until recently, I have found none. I knew it's winter but it actually not that cold. There were still some bug record at the same time of last year but they were disappearing!!
The fact is local villagers have been overusing the so called "Small House Grant" right and try to build as many 3-stories village houses as they can apply. The building right was a policy to ensure the descendants of local had a house to live. Thanks to the outrageously high premise price in urban area, many non-villagers would consider to move in the rural area of New Territories. I must confess that I'm a non-villager as well. The demand of village houses is very high and they appear as quick as the fungus in spring. Thanks to the flaw in the law and poor enforcement, the policy became an unlimited money cow for premises developers and speculators. For years, villagers were tempted to sell their rights and farmlands in order to earn easy and quick money. We could not blame any of them as they could never grow that much of money by farming. A lot of farmers are getting old and they need money for their retirement. They didn't know or couldn't care much what they are about to sacrifice. We are not only losing our beautiful landscape but also our heritage. It was our next generation who paid for the cost.
All these reminded me the Japanese animation namely "Spirited Away" (千と千尋の神隠し) by Hayao Miyazaki, the spirit of Kohaku river (饒速水小白主) was trapped in the realm and controlled by a evil witch. It was because his real name was forgotten by himself as well as the people since the river got reclaimed during development. Today I'm listing the spirits of Shui Lau Tin here, I hope that they will never be forgotten!

澳大利亞的蠼螋 - 63 公釐
蠼螋（注音：ㄐㄩㄝˊ ㄙㄡ，拼音：qú sǒu，音：掘叟）屬昆蟲類的有翅亞綱革翅目。蠼螋俗稱「耳夾子蟲」，牠們的雌蟲在產卵後會像鳥類一樣伏在蟲卵上等待孵化。
蠼螋，為不完全變態類的昆蟲，英文名earwigs，體長約小於一公分到五公分不等，腹部伸縮自如，因此有人深信牠們會爬入人耳，但事實上不常發生。其末端有由尾毛特化成的尾鉗，雌蟲尾鉗平直，雄蟲彎曲，生長在土壤中，落葉堆或岩石下，食性雜食。
此類昆蟲具有高度母愛，雌蟲會不時將卵表面清理乾淨，避免卵受真菌危害，甚至照顧幼蟲至離巢。

Anomala rubripes Lin, 1996 and Anomala virens Lin, 1996 are similar in size.
But A.virens with coppery green ventral aspect (sometimes with reddish tinge)
The most obvious character is the fiery margin of pronotum in Anomala rubripes.
Which is absent in A. virens and A. russiventris.
Anomala russiventris Fairmaire, is rather smaller (1.4~1.8cm).
Anomala cupripes only occurs in China (Yunnan), Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand.
Anomala virens seems not an lowland species. At least with an altitude of higher than 200~300 meters.

Nice, keep track of what you see
A couple of comments:
1- HK has a marked "winter" season in terms of both meteorology and insect diversity. Between December and March the number and diversity of species present and visible is markedly reduced. It springs back up in ...spring! Mid-May to mid-June are generaly the peak for numbers and divesity. October often sees a smaller peak.
2- What you describe is only over a couple of years and was set in Winter. You will have noted a rebound this year already. In consequence species are not really "disapearing", these are just life cycle patterns. This is no to say that species are not disappearing, but to really prove it requires a lot of interconnected data. Data that is in general rare to find or observe for insects...
3- I hope you dont mind my "pontificating" comments above, am just trying to help...
I appreciate any comment. Unfortunately, rebound is not happening in Shui Lau Tin.
Although I keep finding new species in the area, most of the native habitants are clearly reducing as far as I observed. This year I have only seen one juvenile snake. Croaking of frogs and toads are much less.
The quantity as well as variety of insects are clearly reducing. Fireflies, stag beetles, stick insects and many butterflies are nearly gone.
When I moved in this area 15 years ago, it was a village of farmer houses surrounded by vegetable field, sugar canes, wild gingers and good variety of fruit trees. All of them are being replaced by deluxe house with expensive price tag.
Honestly, I'm a nobody in the environment protection but I remember Dr.Kendrick said that data is important weapon to fight the battle. What I can do is just leg works and I wish the data submitted would be helpful somehow.
Well yes if the place has been ravaged as it is with village development in HK, all habitats have been destroyed and your village biodiversity gone, or going...! reducing one notch at a time the territories' biodiversity. I was talking rather generaly I guess, I didn't realise that the village environment had all but been destroyed.
Similar story is happening all over N.T.
I wish more people is aware of the situation and join force in recording wildlife before it's too late.

@sunnetchan, thank you for sharing this story about the nature where you live being destroyed. We see that everywhere, but it sounds like the pace is very quick while you are living. Sad to hear.
Just read this. About 12 months ago I discovered a small marsh low down on Mount Parker. Few people seem to know about it and few people watch it. I have recently seen Water Services Department people there and a couple of people surveying. I am hoping it is unsuitable for any sort of 'improvement'. It has incredible biodiversity and I have been frantically recording there - ignoring virtually all my old sites. Now I am moving again (still within HK) to be nearer our grandchildren. I leave about 4 people watching the site but they don't use iNat despite my pleas. Development in HK frustrates me immensely but I hope 'my' marsh will be spared the fate of your patch.
