This pair was mating on a stump-sprouting bay that had burned in the Morgan Fire and was recovering. It's possible (probable) that the stump they were on was in fact dead. After mating, the female crawled around the trunk several times, probing every crevice with her ovipositor and occasionally spending a few seconds to reach deep in the crevice and presumably deposit an egg. She was clearly using her ovipositor as the primary means of feeling whether or not the crevice was appropriate, and in one of my pics it sort of looks like the tip of the ovipositor is actually articulated, perhaps for this purpose? Meanwhile the male continued to try and stay on her back. Ovipositing seemed to follow mating immediately. Tony has some great video of this at https://goo.gl/photos/yhowBkigi4PinBHE6 |
