Description

It was a Two-horned Gall Wasp "hatch" today in the Monterey Peninsula - Fort Ord & Surrounds region. They were so abundant that one landed on my hand. I guided it to some fresh coast live oak growth I was next to and it didn't hesitate to step onto them. See these observations for galls and context:

Description

More observations of Two-horned Gall Wasps emerging from catkin galls on this Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia). Usually wind complicates photography, but today the wasps were more afraid of flying than me. I didn't even have my good camera and I was still able to get reasonable photos.

It seems like Dryocosmus dubiosus leaf and catkin blister gall season (bisexual) is almost over. Usually they are burgundy red when fresh (February and March on the Monterey Peninsula). I kept these for rearing, which was successful ( see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/206846580 )
