Photos / SoundsWhatSouthern Fire Ant (Solenopsis xyloni)ObserverascendinghopeDescriptionS. xyloni (black variant) invade a termite nest of what I presume are long-jawed termites. I didn't get many good pictures since so many mosquitos kept biting me but I could tell that the termites had heavy casualties. Many worker corpses were being dragged out of the nest. I presume the termite soldiers were still mounting a defence below ground. They probably lost. There was a horde of xyloni. |

Photos / SoundsWhatNearctic Carpenter Ant (Camponotus nearcticus)ObserverbotanicusDescriptionCamponotus cf. nearcticus. Inside a living Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) stem that we sectioned with a chainsaw. Habitat: Red Maple (Acer rubrum) swamp, with numerous White Ash (Fraxinus americana). The shrub layer is dominated by Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) and the herbaceous layer by Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum). Based on aerial images from 1937 and 1958, this area was a meadow (or, 'meadow like') until the 1940's or '50's. Beginning in 2021, or thereabouts, the White Ash have begun to die-back due to Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis). Some of the Red Maple have also died, possibly due to the Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula), which has been noted in abundance on the Red Maples. |

Photos / SoundsWhatSouthern Fire Ant (Solenopsis xyloni)ObserveralterphaseDescriptionID here is for the ants working on the tarantula. Posted to show the ants' behavior of building a partial anthill (sand on the asphalt) around this dead tarantula while they work on it. Sept 23 - tarantula was found dead with no apparent damage. There was no sand around it on the asphalt at that time. Prior photos: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/136244410 Sept 24 - (current photos) small ants were streaming between the corpse and a crack between the asphalt and a wall. They built a low anthill around the tarantula to work on it. Why?
Ants in the first 2 photos might be identifiable. |
