ObserverandreasalimbeniDescriptionHere we have a mature queen of the fungus-growing termite Macrotermes bellicosus (identified from the major soldier caste) laying on my mother's hand. Her very large size of approximately 12 cm is due to the phenomenon of physogastry, a progressive enlargement of the abdomen to make space for more and more masses of ovaries as these queens' colonies mature, massively increasing reproductive output; note how her head and thorax remain the same size of when she originally swarmed and thus appear disproportionate to the rest of her body.
Note that the date is rounded up and might be off of by a few days at worst. |

Photos / SoundsObserverandreasalimbeniDescriptionHere we have some alcohol-preserved Crenetermes albotarsalis, a relatively large Cubitermitinae very common in the Camerunian forest near Nguinda village. In the first pic we have a soldier, a physogastric queen and a king, while the second focus on the defensive caste alone. |

"Flight Evidence" should be used for seasonality data of nuptial flights (e.g. at black lights or beginning founding), and "Colony Evidence" should be applied to reproductives in established colonies.
