Crimson Rātā (Metrosideros carminea)

Observer

jacqui-nz

Date

October 11, 2017 02:07 PM NZDT

Description

Thrilled to find a wild flowering M. carminea vine beside the track. The vine was growing on a tall tree fern trunk (no fronds) that had snapped near the base. Possibly from the weight of the vine.

A M. carminea vine was planted at Arataki Visitor Centre nearby over the hill, about 10 years ago. Wondered if there's a possibility the wild vine self-seeded from the planted vine?

July 2019 update: current status of the vine, looked dead but showing signs of life: https://inaturalist.nz/observations/28712258

Observer

pjd1

Date

April 11, 2017

Description

Young wilding tree 4 m tall growing on side of Waiorua Stream. No adults seen in the area - presumably self-established from bird dispersed fruits, either from the nearby mainland (where this tree is common) or from somewhere in the Waiorua Settlement (private land).

This is a serious environmental weed for Kapiti Island.

What

Large-leaved Milk Tree (Paratrophis banksii)

Observer

pjd1

Date

April 11, 2017

Description

Solitary tree c. 7 m tall growing on margin of Waiorua Stream. One of the many pleasing results of the eradication of rats from Kapiti in 1996 has been the spectacular spread of Streblus banksii. In 1998 I knew of scattered trees and though this specie is still uncommon there are now numerous seedlings, saplings and trees of this size scattered throughout the northern half of the island (which I surveyed). A wonderful result as the fruits and seedlings of this tree are directly predated on by rats - if they had been left in Kapiti, ultimately this tree would have gone extinct there.

What

Cutty Grass (Carex geminata)

Observer

pjd1

Date

April 11, 2017

Description

Common in muddy back swamp adjacent Waiorua.

I am placing this observation within C. geminata s.l. because the spikelets are long and narrow ('worm-like) but note that the utricles are beaked - so equating with C. lessoniana (C. geminata s.s. is said to have 'shortly beaked, or un-beaked' utricles.

There is also a third entity in this complex on Kapiti Island - the widespread, seemingly unnamed C. aff. geminata (known by the tag names 'coast' and 'giant') which is common in coastal swamps.

See discussion on the taxonomic issues of this group and field distinctions under http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/6020229 - an observation that fits Carex lessoniana best.
