Lycopodium japonicumObserver

Found this species of Lycopodium after trekking for 30 minutes from Lamahatta ecopark. It was growing profusely under conifer forest floor (Cryptomeria japonica).
Distribution is restricted to higher elevations.
Lycopodium japonicum can be identified by the presence of stalked and branched strobilus.
The stalks were visible but the strobili were not present.

Smallest Lycophyte I have seen so far..4-6 cm high, erect.
Looks like a large moss at first glance.
Found on the way to way to Jorbanglaw from Darjeeling. Along moist slopes.
The kidney shaped sporangia are borne on the axil of leaves (microphylls). No seperate stobilus.
Rather rare as I have seen it only once during my trip to Darjeeling
