Update 8/17/2023: Since two limpkins were photographed foraging together on 6/15 at Guerrero Park and one was photographed at the Hill-of-Life ("Trails End") Dam on Barton Creek on 7/19, there appear to be at least 2 and probably more limpkins in the area. Many new records are known around the Gulf Coast and including East Texas. The birds appear to be expanding from the Florida population.
[This individual may be the same one documented on Barton Creek June-July 2022 and at Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metro Park June 2023. It is very tolerant of people.]

I believe several species are possible. Protracta has been suggested for Black Gap, but recurva (known primarily from Arizona in the US) looks more likely based on morphology. A second specimen from nearby in 1985 was also photographed. Both were seen in limestone cave shelters. Triatoma species generally were common at Black Gap WMA.
