Description

The field where this is widespread was hayed in late June. I saw no evidence of flowers or fruit. What's interesting is that I found plenty of Virginia Groundcherry (all with narrow leaves) growing alongside this with empty but dried up fruit husks still hanging off the stems.

Description

After review of iNat photos, keys & identification guides, I'm calling it P. vagus & because I've previously observed this species in same & nearby areas.
.
I believe this is a female ... except in the last two pics, the background seems to have a male. Males have a bit of yellow on the antennae & face. Oddity : although only 3 seconds elapsed between the last two shots & the position of the opening in the Sedum is largely unchanged, the orientation of antennae between the two subjects reversed. What's up with that?
.
Am I seeing a subbasal median depression in pic 2, 3 & 4? It's not median though & seems to be at about 2 o'clock but what do I know.
.
Even though the tegula doesn't seem to have any yellow, what concerns me is that this species is supposed to have discal spots on tergum 1 and it doesn't.
.
I'm batting zero on these wasps so it may be misidentified. I only hope that ultimately, it's made right because these are rather rare.

Just for fun.
Landing gear was retracted & drivin' like a bat out of hell. It's face reminded me of a floppy jowled dog with it's head out the window while rockin' down the highway.
I believe pic#2 is the same crazy bee making a harassment flyby. Less than a minute between shots.

After researching, I thought this to be a female E. crypticus but it's not a selection in the iNat suggestions.

Perhaps in time I'll learn to key this genus ... but after much time trying today, all I got was a wicked headache.
Thought it was E. crypticus because of antennae color but face color/pattern isn't that of either male or female.

@matthias22 can't species ID this and even genus is giving me fits. Looks like Eumenes fraternus got involved at some point (we have many of those in this area).
This Observation has 13 pics that hopefully will allow someone to confidently identify this wasp.
Thank you iNat community!
