I saw this amazing aggregation of American toads in the C&O Canal at mi.11.50, just downstream from Marsden footbridge. In the photo I counted over 75 animals in just the space proximal to the towpath. Along at least a hundred-foot stretch there were numerous toads in amplexus, including one group consisting of one female and at least four males on her, with more trying to get on. I first noticed males calling this year on Mar 15. Today was the hottest day of the year with temps reaching 85F. Went back the next two days and there were no toads to be seen (or heard).
