What

American Bison Bison bison

Observer

janetjones

Date

October 8, 2016

Description

This bison was limping badly (front right leg) and came to a complete stop when it saw me and the car in front of me come around the corner. As the car in front of me stopped in the middle of the lane for a photo, I took one as well - and he had his tail raised and was gruffing at us. My guess is that he was "tapped" by a car. He was heading east and by afternoon as I drove out, he had made it almost to the East Gate. He wasn't limping nearly as much.

Dusky Grouse Dendragapus obscurus

Observer

Date

Description

The male was displaying, but flew off into the trees as I pulled over for a photo.

A few people have looked at it and ID'd it as a Blue Grouse, but the Yellowstone Bird Checklist doesn't include that, so am listing it as a Dusky Grouse. Happy to take suggestions.

What

Grizzly Bear Ursus arctos ssp. horribilis

Observer

janetjones

Date

September 18, 2016

Description

Saw a couple of cars stopped and noticed a cub nosing around a trash can. Soon Mom appeared as well. So, a sow with just one cub. The sow rubbed on the edge of one picnic table, then rubbed on a tree next to it and as they made their way closer, I warned others to get in their cars (most did), and left the area. Just before I left, the cub caught a scent from one of the cars and started to head toward them.

I had to really search for ones that even had any dried petals on them, so at the tail end of bloom. The rest were well on their way to making seeds. This year's "crop" didn't seem as good as last year, not as many and not as large.
