What
Whip Cicadas (Genus Okanagana)Observer
janetjonesDescription
In a class with the Yellowstone Association on Mastering Your Naturalist Skills, we had the opportunity to watch a cicada emerge.
What
American Bison (Bison bison)Observer
janetjonesDescription
This bison was limping badly (front right leg) and came to a complete stop when it saw me and the car in front of me come around the corner. As the car in front of me stopped in the middle of the lane for a photo, I took one as well - and he had his tail raised and was gruffing at us. My guess is that he was "tapped" by a car. He was heading east and by afternoon as I drove out, he had made it almost to the East Gate. He wasn't limping nearly as much.
What
Coyote (Canis latrans)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Spotted the coyote walking by the edge of Yellowstone Lake at Mary Bay. Watched it cross the road and then hunt (successfully) for voles.

What
Wandering Garter Snake (Thamnophis elegans ssp. vagrans)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Walking along the trail and lost in conversation with a friend, I almost stepped on this large garter snake. Didn't expect that.
What
Dusky Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus)Observer
janetjonesDescription
The male was displaying, but flew off into the trees as I pulled over for a photo.
A few people have looked at it and ID'd it as a Blue Grouse, but the Yellowstone Bird Checklist doesn't include that, so am listing it as a Dusky Grouse. Happy to take suggestions.
What
Canada Jay (Perisoreus canadensis)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Gray Jay seen along the top most boardwalk at West Thumb.

What
Entelegyne Spiders (Infraorder Entelegynae)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Spotted this spider on a rock just below the boardwalk to the right of the overflow channel from Lakeside Spring. Not absolutely sure it's an orbweaver, so would love confirmation or other input.
What
American Black Bear (Ursus americanus)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Spotted this boy strolling through the Sedge Bay thermal area on my way into the park.
What
Western Pondhawk (Erythemis collocata)Observer
janetjonesDescription
While walking between the Sawmill Group and Geyser Hill, the Western Meadowhawks were hanging out at the Frog Pools. Didn't notice it at the time, but one of the spiders that lives on microbe mats was also caught in the photo.
What
Glacier Lily (Erythronium grandiflorum)Observer
janetjonesDescription
I had to really search for ones that even had any dried petals on them, so at the tail end of bloom. The rest were well on their way to making seeds. This year's "crop" didn't seem as good as last year, not as many and not as large.

What
Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Visitors at the Sylvan Lake picnic area reported seeing him just a few minutes before I arrived. I saw him not far away.
Photos / Sounds
What
Grasses, Sedges, Cattails, and Allies (Order Poales)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Unknown grass (I'm not as good with grasses - yet), though I think this might be one of the invasive species. All that I found were in bloom. Sorry about the photos not being better, but hopefully it's enough to identify.
What
Lanceleaf Springbeauty (Claytonia lanceolata)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Not as many as seen a couple of weeks ago, but still found a few in bloom.

In abundance and pretty much looking at the peak of bloom.
What
Fendler's Meadow-Rue (Thalictrum fendleri)Observer
janetjonesDescription
In abundance just a bit along the trail here. Not quite yet in bloom.
What
White Globeflower (Trollius laxus ssp. albiflorus)Observer
janetjonesDescription
In abundance along the smaller stream here. They have been in bloom for awhile. I'd have to check my field notes to see exactly when I first saw them this year, but it's usually as soon as the snow recedes.
What
Elk (Cervus canadensis)Observer
janetjonesDescription
A couple of bull elk were hanging out. Always interesting to me to see the growth change on the antlers through the summer.
What
Arrowleaf Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Just a few were growing on this slope where there must be just enough sun for them to grow in this shady little canyon.

A couple of bushes were blooming on the hillside.

What
Rocky Mountain Elder (Sambucus racemosa var. melanocarpa)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Blooming at the pullout at the "Sylvan Falls" pullout on Sylvan Pass.
I'm not certain of how to enter in the correct species. The YNP flower books I have list it as Sambucus racemosa L.

What
American Bison (Bison bison)Observer
janetjonesDescription
There have been six bison seen in this area for the past couple of weeks, this time I only spotted one, but others could have easily been in the trees nearby. There was a group of five in a line head west at Mary Bay - perhaps the other five?
What
Baby Blue Eyes, Phacelias, and Waterleaves (Subfamily Hydrophylloideae)Observer
janetjonesDescription
Phacelia is a best guess ID on this - definitely need some ID help for this one. The leaves directly above the bloom belong to it.
What
Glacier Lily (Erythronium grandiflorum)Observer
janetjonesDescription
They're just starting to open up for 2016. Did not see any blooms on the 6th when I drove by, though I didn't get out and really look then.
What
Yellowstone Monkeyflower (Erythranthe thermalis)Observer
janetjonesDescription
The first I found blooming at Biscuit Basin, but they've been out at least for a short while now.
What
Common Raven (Corvus corax)Observer
janetjonesDescription
While eating lunch in my car, a pair of ravens started to exhibit courting behavior after they gave up begging from me. They would caw, slightly "shrug" their wings, one would open its beak and the other would pretend feed it, then bow and then they'd both look up and the pattern would repeat. Just as soon as I started to record a video of it, another raven pair flew in and disrupted the courtship behavior.
