What

Whip Cicadas (Genus Okanagana)

Observer

janetjones

Date

June 16, 2016

Description

In a class with the Yellowstone Association on Mastering Your Naturalist Skills, we had the opportunity to watch a cicada emerge.

What

American Bison (Bison bison)

Observer

janetjones

Date

October 8, 2016

Description

This bison was limping badly (front right leg) and came to a complete stop when it saw me and the car in front of me come around the corner. As the car in front of me stopped in the middle of the lane for a photo, I took one as well - and he had his tail raised and was gruffing at us. My guess is that he was "tapped" by a car. He was heading east and by afternoon as I drove out, he had made it almost to the East Gate. He wasn't limping nearly as much.

What

Coyote (Canis latrans)

Observer

Spotted the coyote walking by the edge of Yellowstone Lake at Mary Bay. Watched it cross the road and then hunt (successfully) for voles.

What

Wandering Garter Snake (Thamnophis elegans ssp. vagrans)

Observer

janetjones

Date

October 8, 2016

Description

Walking along the trail and lost in conversation with a friend, I almost stepped on this large garter snake. Didn't expect that.

What

Dusky Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus)

Observer

janetjones

Date

October 8, 2016

Description

The male was displaying, but flew off into the trees as I pulled over for a photo.

A few people have looked at it and ID'd it as a Blue Grouse, but the Yellowstone Bird Checklist doesn't include that, so am listing it as a Dusky Grouse. Happy to take suggestions.

Observer

janetjones

Date

August 20, 2016

Spotted this spider on a rock just below the boardwalk to the right of the overflow channel from Lakeside Spring. Not absolutely sure it's an orbweaver, so would love confirmation or other input.

Photos / Sounds

What

Western Pondhawk (Erythemis collocata)

Observer

janetjones

Date

August 12, 2016

Description

While walking between the Sawmill Group and Geyser Hill, the Western Meadowhawks were hanging out at the Frog Pools. Didn't notice it at the time, but one of the spiders that lives on microbe mats was also caught in the photo.

Photos / Sounds

What

Glacier Lily (Erythronium grandiflorum)

Observer

janetjones

Date

June 10, 2016

Description

I had to really search for ones that even had any dried petals on them, so at the tail end of bloom. The rest were well on their way to making seeds. This year's "crop" didn't seem as good as last year, not as many and not as large.

Observer

janetjones

Unknown grass (I'm not as good with grasses - yet), though I think this might be one of the invasive species. All that I found were in bloom. Sorry about the photos not being better, but hopefully it's enough to identify.

In abundance along the smaller stream here. They have been in bloom for awhile. I'd have to check my field notes to see exactly when I first saw them this year, but it's usually as soon as the snow recedes.

American Bison (Bison bison)

Observer

janetjones

Date

May 13, 2016

Description

There have been six bison seen in this area for the past couple of weeks, this time I only spotted one, but others could have easily been in the trees nearby. There was a group of five in a line head west at Mary Bay - perhaps the other five?

What

Common Raven (Corvus corax)

Observer

janetjones

Date

April 17, 2016

Description

While eating lunch in my car, a pair of ravens started to exhibit courting behavior after they gave up begging from me. They would caw, slightly "shrug" their wings, one would open its beak and the other would pretend feed it, then bow and then they'd both look up and the pattern would repeat. Just as soon as I started to record a video of it, another raven pair flew in and disrupted the courtship behavior.
