It was very warm today for March (12°C) and this fly appeared on our patio. I have not seen flies in the open air in March in previous years. It flew away before I could get any other goof views. Note that its eyes look damaged. Is that from the cold?

Description

5 mm length. Found this dead ant in a jar of water I had dipped from a brook while looking for amphipods during the winter. It's hard to believe that this ant was actually in the brook. Perhaps it was in the empty jar before I dipped the jar in the brook. I was pretty certain that the jar was entirely empty but I find it hard to believe that a dead ant would be in the icy brook water in January. On the other hand, maybe the fast moving water eroded a bank upstream and washed a nest of hibernating ants into the brook. That may be possible too.
