A: Botanical information:
Common name: Dogbane, milkweed, honeybloom, bitter root, black hemp, hemp dogbane, lechuguilla, westernwall.
Botanical characteristics: Indian hemp, also called Hemp Dogbane, (species Apocynum cannabinum), North American plant of the dogbane family Apocynaceae (order Gentianales). It is a branched perennial that grows up to 1.5 m (5 feet) tall and has smooth opposite leaves and small white flowers. From the bottom, the leaves are usually opposite, and they change into alternate when they rise at the top. These leaves are palmately compound with 3-9 leaflets. Especially on the large plants, the leaves can be 10” length, and in the small plants, they are just only half this size. Each leaflet is narrowly ovate and serrated along the margins. The middle leaflets are larger than the laterial leaflets. The upper surface of each leaflet is dark green.

  • Indian hemp looks beautiful with both genders. The male plants produce both leaf axils. The male plants are up to 1’ long; and have small leaves and flower stem. Each male flower is about 1/8” (3mm). In size, consisting 5 stamens with large anthers, and no petals. The oblong or lanceolate petals are green. The leaves are creamy or pale yellow as they mature. After these flowers drop pollen, male plants ‘s leaves will change into yellow and wither. The female have short axillary flowers. They are the same length as male plants. Their flowers are also the same length as male. However, they have a single petal and an ovary of two types. The surface of this beak is green and covered with linear hairs. At the bottom of their flowers, leaves are lanceolate. There are also small leaves along the plants. The flowing period occurs from mid-summer to early autumn. When they become mature, female flower change into brown color .

    -Habitat: Indian hemp usually lives in the place that has sunlight and soil moisture. It loves the disturbed areas such as roadways, railroads and fields. It also occurs in wet areas such as river banks, marshes, shores and thickets. Indian hemp is native in North America. It also occurs in the central half of Canada and throughout United State.
