There were at least a dozen of these associated with 3-4 golden oak trees along 200m of the trail. They seem to party when slanting gold evening light illumines a golden oak, although I saw a few active beneath a golden oak 20 minutes before this.

Description

This one is a tough call. It could be pieris rapae, Cabbage White. Tiny black specks, or yellow near the body, would confirm p. rapae, but they are not present.

So I have decided to ID it as a late-season p. marginalis. 2d and 3rd generation p. marginalis can be very pale.

I saw several dozen of these at the preserve but all were camera-shy. This is not GBWN because that is extremely rare in S Clara Cy and friends who have visited this area many times over the years to look for butterflies have never seen it at Long Ridge.

Most of the wood nymphs I saw were near the intersection of Peters Creek and Ridge Trails, but I couldn't get a photo.

Description

It seemed late in the year for fawns to have spots, but another, poorly seen fawn near the top of Peters Creek trail also seemed to have spots.
A ranger I spoke with at the end of the day mentioned that she had the impression that fawns may have been born later this year at some MROSD preserves, perhaps due to the cool spring we had.
