Weather: Grey cloud cover but no rain
I found this in the front yard at a house right beside Mclean Creek Park. The house is located right on the edge of a clear cut. The dominate overstory species in the area range from Douglas fir, Grand fir, and Western Redcedar to Alder and baby Douglas fir growing in the clear cut. Around the edge of the property the most dominate understory species where Red huckleberry, salal, swordfern and some invasive species of blackberry and closer to the road scotch broom.
In the front of the property is an ole apple tree orchard. I have no idea what kind of apple trees they were but they seemed older and had not been pruned in a least 10 years. There were small patches growing somewhat sporadically on 2 of the apple trees, the bigger ones grow on the higher branches.

I found this in the front yard at a house right beside Mclean Creek Park. The house is located right on the edge of a clear cut. This one was growing everywhere in small to medium patches throughout the property. I found it mostly in the sunnier spots in more disturbed areas such as close to the driveway, in the gravel, and even by the fence beside the road.

I’m not completely sure about the ID on this one; I found patches of Polytrichum juniperium growing on the ground in the more disturbed areas near the driveway. They look similar but the tops of the false Polytrichum where distinctively different and then Polytrichum juniperium.

I found this in the front yard at a house right beside Mclean Creek Park. The house is located right on the edge of a clear cut. I found this in the front yard at a house right beside Mclean Creek Park. The house is located right on the edge of a clear cut. The dominate overstory species in the area range from Douglas fir, Grand fir, and Western Redcedar to Alder and baby Douglas fir growing in the clear cut. Around the edge of the property the most dominant understory species where Red huckleberry, salal, swordfern and some invasive species of blackberry and closer to the road scotch broom.
I found this one hanging on the branch of a 60 to 80 year old Douglas fir tree. The patches where large but not as thick as I’ve seen them in Mclean Creek. I could only see it on the lower branches.

I found this on the ground all around the house and through out most of the backyard. It formed dense mats that where so thick they where spongy.

Found at the very beginning of the Shadow boardwalk tail. The patch was on a dead branch sticking out of the ground. I love the way it spirals around the top of the branch. The forest was a mixture of western redceder, firs, and red alder. In the surrounding area there was red huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium), Indian plum (Oemleria cerasiformis), and boldhip rose (Rosa gymnocarpa). I didn’t get a sample because it was too far off the boardwalk trail. It looks like a tree-ruffle liverwort, Porella naricularis

Found at the very beginning of the Shadow boardwalk tail. The patch was on a large root ball possibly on a Western Redceder. There where several patches on the root ball but mainly around the edge, also not growing directly at the water level. On the trail I found several large patches on the ground as well as on stumps. The forest was a mixture of western redceder, firs, and red alder

Found on the ground in an open area under a stand of Pseudotsuga menziesii. There where so many and all of them had puffs of white coming off their sporophytes.

Found on a Pseudotsuga menziesii near the base in a northwest facing direction. In a second growth forest about 5m from the stream. Overstory mainly Pseudotsuga menziesii, Acer macrophyllum, and Thuja plicata. The understory consisted of Acer circinatum, Gaultheria shallon, and Mahonia nervosa

At the Bloedel Reserve in the moss garden. It was cold and raining for most of the day. The location was by a little stream in the shade of a Western Redcear (Thuja plicata). There was a large patch of it growing in a spreading fashion.

Weather: Snowing on and off throughout the afternoon.
Habitat: Second growth forest with the oldest tree between 60 and 80 yrs, Douglas fir dominant. Lots of conifer saplings at the edge of forest along with salal, evergreen huckleberry, and some invasive holly.
Found on the side of an older Douglas fir toward the base of the trunk. Growth form was a cushion and there where several others spread around the tree. Lipstick cladonia was growing on top and all around the sample I collected and because it was frozen instead of braking off a piece the whole cushion come off including the lipstick lichen.
Capsule like sporpophytes, cells oblong and narrow throughout the leaf.

On 16th street off of College, on a retired Apple tree (that doesn’t bare fruit anymore) (Google, OSM)Description
Weather: Snowing big flakes most of the time, about 6 inches of snow on the ground.
Habitat: front yard in an older suburban district
Not many other species in the immediate area, there is another retired fruit tree of some type in the front yard as well, along with non-native rose bushes and rhododendron by the house.
Found in a small cluster at the base of a lower branch, there where other clusters further out on the same branch and on some of the other branches as well. There where no sporpophytes present on any. Are its sporpophytes seasonal?
