What
Giant Hygroscopic Earthstar (Astraeus pteridis)Observer
nicolettekhanDescription
May be some kind of mushroom - cap felt mushroom-like and seemed to emit brown dusty spores. Found along the edge of a fire lane trail - only saw 3 (all next to each other) in a couple mile stretch. First time I turned one over, a swarm of insects was underneath. Dry and black underneath - "legs" texture similar to a fruit rind? Not rooted/connected to anything. Approx. 3.5 inches across.
