Description

Naviculoid diatom, very small, impossible to identify without cleaned frustules and access to a scanning electron microscope. Similar in shape and size to Navicula atomus but equally likely to be a species from a different genus, e.g. Achnanthes. Scrapings from exterior moist surface of a plant pot in a suburban garden.

Description

Scrapings from the moist outer surface of a plant pot in a suburban garden. Trichomes tightly convoluted within a thin, firm mucilaginous sheath. Heterocysts intercalary. Abundant growths.

Description

Omahu Bush Reserve, collected by Colin Meurck. Rarely observed in mucilaginous green colonies dominated by Cylindrocystis cf. Brebissonii. Pair of cells surrounded by stratified colourless mucilage. Cells ca. 47 micrometres wide by 35 micrometres long, golden-brown to orange, full of storage product. Possibly the "Gloeodinium-phase" of Hemidinium nasutum

Description

Omahu Bush, collector Colin Meurck, seepage in deep shade. Mucilaginous green colonies dominated by Cylindrocystic cf. brebissonii with this alga as an associate. Cells ca.. 10 micrometres diameter, containing numerous oil globules. Chloroplast parietal, lobed, lacking a pyrenoid.

Description

Richly branched trichomes. Branches uniseriate, ca. 5 micrometres wide. Unusual habitat: scrapings from inside a rain gauge, taken on cleaning rain collector at Hinewai Reserve!
