What
Hawthorns (Genus Crataegus)Observer
rebecca234Description
Several tree/large shrubs plus a number of young starts an in an area about 15-20 ft sq (about same height)
Fruit is slightly sweetish, smells a bit like apples but has a slight citrus tang. Orangish soft pulpy interior, five hard 1/4" long lemon wedge shaped seeds in a ball at the center; structure of fruit reminds me of a rose hip. Large leaves, saw edged but not obviously lobed (my hand is 6" long for comparison in photos), growing singly not in bunches, alternate on branches roughly 1.5"-2" between nodes. Thorns are 3"+ at ends of branches; bark in same area looks similar in color and pattern to cherry bark. Clump growing at the corner of 3 properties; given property designs I believe it has grown naturally not been planted, but no one knows.
I believe its a type of hawthorne, but the leaf is much larger than those I've seen before, well past the 1-3" listed as characteristic.

Western Toad (Anaxyrus boreas)Observer
rebecca234Description
Beautiful toad found hunting in the garden at 9:30 pm. We caught, photographed and released. Decent size, much larger than the pacific tree frogs, I think about 2.5" from snoot to tail and maybe 1.5 oz or so.

What
Elongate Springtails (Order Entomobryomorpha)Observer
rebecca234Description
Too tiny to photograph.
Small group collected from leaf litter outdoors in fall 2022 and introduced to indoor isopod enclosure (unheated) with similar leaf litter -- has proliferated! Slowly introduced in small groups (small scoop of substrate/sphagnum) to 4 more isopod enclosures (holding different species) and has fully populated all of them. No negative effects seen; ispods successfully multiplying themselves.
These springtails are a cream/pale yellow color. Viewed under 30x magnification, this species has a seperate head that is somewhat ant-like in shape, two small dark eyes, six legs (longer than most other species of this shape presented as examples on iNaturalist) on narrow, elongated oval body that is smooth and rounded. Has 2 antennae that look like they've got maybe 3 segments (very similar to isopods in appearance). Body is covered in coarse hairs, with much longer hairs on the area of the thorax behind the head (shoulders/upper back). Largest specimens 2-3 mm in length, less than 1 mm wide. Hypermobile and in near constant movement, does show some preference for congregating under wood pieces as well as in moister areas, but active throughout the surface of enclosure. Observed consuming both potato peels and a dead cricket, extra interest shown, but not swarming them.
