tessafDescription
Female hanging out on a snag next to the side pond at union bay natural area.
What
Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus)Observer
tessafDescription
Juvenile, hanging out by the path. A terrible picture but I did my best. Had distinct white eye rings and white outer tail feathers. Light brown tum with a bib of markings.
What
Douglas' Squirrel (Tamiasciurus douglasii)Observer
tessafDescription
This little guy and his friend wouldn't leave us alone while we were packing up our camping stuff. He stole a piece of bread and ran off.
What
Northwestern Garter Snake (Thamnophis ordinoides)Observer
tessafDescription
This little guy was hanging out next to the path down to the beach and let me pick him up for a minute to take pictures.
What
Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)Observer
tessafDescription
A couple of these guys were sitting on some telephone wires by the street. They had the distinct black stripe on their necks.
What
Starry Flounder (Platichthys stellatus)Observer
tessafDescription
This guy is a lefteye flounder for certain, the exact species I'm not quite sure about (I think I'm right though). Some gulls had caught it and were trying to eat it, so we shoo'd them away for a moment to take a picture. I only got the blind side, unfortunately, but the other side was mottled brown.
What
Columbian Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus ssp. columbianus)Observer
tessafDescription
This big guy wandered across the street in front of our car as we were driving to the beach.
What
Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)Observer
tessafDescription
It was facing away from me like it is in the picture, so I couldn't get a good look at it, but I think it's a song sparrow rather than a fox sparrow or something else like that.
What
European Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)Observer
tessafDescription
I don't know the exact species. I would assume its one of the introduced European rabbits, but I thought it would be better to wait for someone to confirm it.
What
Townsend's Chipmunk (Neotamias townsendii)Observer
tessafDescription
This is just a guess. All I know about this little guy is that it's a chipmunk and that it was found in a coastal Washington forest near Ocean Shores. I made the guess that it's a Townsend's chipmunk based on the locality, the dark coat, and the light and dark stripes on its head.
What
Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)Observer
tessafDescription
This Flicker was hanging out on a tree between the water and the road.

What
Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina)Observer
tessafDescription
We heard this bird singing at the very end of the Hatchery Trail in Seward Park. It was up in a large Bigleaf Maple and dropped to the ground for a few moments before flying off into the forest.

What
Brown Creeper (Certhia americana)Observer
tessafDescription
I saw this little guy climbing up a tree and then watched it flit over to another before disappearing off the path. I couldn't get a picture.
What
Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)Observer
tessafDescription
These two eagles had their nest in a large Douglas fir tree on the edge of the clearing. The female was sitting in the nest with just her head visible and the male was perched in another Douglas fir nearby observing the area.
