Description

Snapping Turtle found basking on side of trail. Individual with a carapace size of about 20cm long. Quite an early observation given that there is still ice scattered throughout the wetland here. No mistake about ID but unfortunately did not have a camera with me. The time of this observation should read 2:12pm EST. I couldn’t change it back after I entered it wrong.

Description

Found on inside window frame at 3:34 pm. Outside temp. about 4C. I think this moth must have emerged or pupated from within one of our many houseplants that we bring in from the outside each fall. Not sure where else it might have come from.

Description

This was a very interesting observation. I exited Portsmouth Harbour south parking area and I drove north on Yonge Street. Just a few houses up on the west side I noticed a large imm. Coppers Hawk sitting in a small bare deciduous tree in front of one of the condos. Some House Sparrows were chattering in the shrubs behind it, Realizing that my camera was in the back of the car I decided to make a loop back through Portsmouth Harbour in order to get the camera out of view of the hawk and then drive back up from the south again with hopes of getting a picture. As I entered Portsmouth again two joggers went by heading south on Yonge towards the bird so I figured I would never see the bird again. When I exited Portsmouth from the south once more, now with my camera out, I looked up the street and could see the two joggers standing on the road looking towards the condo where the hawk had been. Briefly I saw the bird flapping along the side of the house. I proceeded out and north slowly, stopping in front of the condo with my window down. After a few seconds the hawk came out of the low dense garden shrubs walking along the sidewalk. It strutted along the walkway peering in here and there like a lion stalking prey. Once reaching the south side of the shrubs it peered in again and then jumped in and I could hear quite a flutter. A few seconds later it flew out with a small item in its clutches that I assume must have been a house sparrow.

I was surprised that it would go after such small birds in such dense cover as the small birds should have a great advantage by being able to get into the deep tangle where the hawk could not. But somehow the hawk managed to get its prey..

Though Coopers and other accipiters are known to do this on occasion, it was still amazing to see this bird ground stalking its prey
