Bluebottles by the millions all along the coast from the Waimeha. Stream to the Waikanae river. Presumably all up and down the Kapiti coast. Often they were rafted together. They were all fairly small.

Walking through the edge of the surf, I kept seeing these little hairs/sticks as the water receded. At first I thought they were just fine bits of driftwood etc, but I would see bunches of them and some seemed to wiggle more than the current could account for. So with some effort collected a few, and these critters later emerged.

What
Blackbird (Turdus merula)Observer
tony_willsDescription
The blackbird arrived on the branch, flicking its tail and looking around. It then dropped to the ground. A few seconds later a Tui arrives on the branch and the blackbird attacks it from below. The tui hopped along the branch further and was again attacked. I know tui are nesting above here, not sure about the blackbirds.

I'm not sure whether spiders can see infrared lights, but I'm sure the moths can. Either way spiders seem to like building their webs in front of my IR lights.
