A golden beauty that looks more like a flower than a mushroom. This mushroom is yellow-gold to almost orange and in concolorous on all surfaces. Flesh is white and peels like string cheese. Gills extend down stipe and are very shallow.
Habitat: Found in a large growth forest, mostly closely beneath conifer trees, especially western red cedar.
Weather: Misty, overcast, cool, ~55F, wet.

A small fungus with shades of brown in a zonate pattern ending at the tip in white. Undersides are pure white with teeny-tiny tubes. The largest specimens were only about 2.5 inches long.
Habitat: Growing on a debarked, fallen log in a conifer forest that is primarily Douglas-fir, with western hemlock, bigleaf maple and western red cedar. Under story is tall sword ferns and trailing blackberry with a few salmonberry plants.
Weather: Wet, 55F, full overcast sky.

Western Redcedar (Thuja plicata)Observer

A conifer tree that is visibly shorter than Douglas-fir, and its Abies cousins. A lovely, sweet smelling tree with reddish bark that exfoliates in thin, hair-like strands. Its reddish twigs grow off the branches in a downward direction, making the tree look a bit droopy, like a wet dog. A key identifier of this species is the shape of the bloom on the undersides of the leaves, it makes two rows that look like "butterflies".
Habitat: Growing in partial shade next to Douglas-fir and western hemlock in a preserved garden on The Evergreen State College campus next to parking lot C.
Weather: Rainy, 55F, and with full overcast sky.

Habitat: Growing on a thickly duff and moss covered rock in an old growth conifer forest, consisting of primarily Douglas-fir, western red cedar and western hemlock.

A giant mushroom that is up to 8.5 inches in length. Cap diameter is 8 inches. Stipe is 8 inches long. Flesh is white and does not stain quickly. Cap is red in the center fading to orage and yellow on the edges with white veil remants. Universal veil present. Taste is meaty and palatable.

An immature tree specimen with bright green leaves that are 2-dimensional in that they only grow from the sides of the branches. Apex of leaves are emarginate. Leaves connect to twig with a peg. Undersides of leaves have two rows of stomatal bloom. Terminal buds are tan and round and typically grow in threes.
Habitat: Growing in the partial sun by the side of a cleared path. Growing under Douglas-fir and Western Hemlock. Under story included sword fern, mosses, licorice fern, and lots of large woody debris.
Weather: Misty, rainy day with full overcast sky and 60F.

A hanging moss that covers the tree in long, thin strands. The moss was groups of long, branched strands with very tiny, narrow leaves. Moss is yellow-green colored with tiny leaves.
Habitat: Found on an young snag of an unidentifiable tree, a maple perhaps? in an old growth conifer forest dominated by Douglas-fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock.
